Youth walk in clinic to open in the Spring

Sailor in iconic V-Day kiss passes away

95 year old George Mendonsa died on Sunday. George was the sailor captured in the celebration kiss that become famous known as "The Kiss".  This is a statue of the iconic photo found in Sarasota Florida.

The Life and Business of a Peterborough Real Estate Agent

I am proud of what I do for a living and the service that I provide to my clients. Last year I had a family approach me as they were looking to downsize their home. We had an initial meeting and during that meeting we came up with a plan to accomplish what their goals were. We started off with finding the replacement home that would work for them. This process did take a few months to accomplish but we were able to do so. We looked at around 15 homes that came up for sale. My clients took a couple of attempts on a few homes but did not win competitions. Finally "the" home came for sale. My clients placed an offer on it and it was accepted. We did have a condition of selling their home. We immediately put their home up for sale. It did not take long for someone to attempt to bump us off our purchase. My clients and I took the time to weigh out the risks of removing the sale of property condition and go solid on their purchase. We did remove the condition. We were able to sell the Buyers home and everything closed just fine. The lessons on this sale was we took risks but we had a plan for all the variables. It was still stressful but we were able to execute the plan in place. Always have a good plan in place an your real estate transaction will go smoothly.

Being a Dad

Lucas and I had fun this Family Day weekend on a ATV track that I built for him at the cottage. The snow was deep so I carved out a track with the snowblower. Lucas traveled that track many times but Dad had a few goes on it as well!

Controversial Market likely to get one more year of craziness

• City will be launching a public consultation to find out what kind of farmers market people want. Questions like does in matter if the product is locally grown or not.
• An open bidding process will happen to invite any prospective operators for the following 5 years
• Cindy Hope remains president of the current Farmers market

NorthCrest Temporarily Closed

• A water main break at the arena Sunday closed the arena
• Emergency repairs are continuing but it is unknown when the facility will reopen

Crowley's next match expected on foreign soil

• Next two or three bouts will be on the road.
• Crowley does not expect to fight in Peterborough until the end of 2019 or early 2020 with PMC not being available because of floor repairs
• Currently Crowley is ranked 14th in the IBF intercontinental rankings
• Crowley wants to bring boxing alive in Canada. His goal is having ShoBox and Showtime in Peterborough for his next hometown fight
• Crowley's manager says Cody is on his way up. He is not there yet. Once everything clicks it will be a Beautiful Thing

February 12/2019 Walk and Talk

Looks like Selwyn council will have a very interesting meeting tonight.  There is Three parts of the meeting that I am going to watch closely.

First is Guy Hanchet. Guy is coming before Council to ask about the progress on the implementation of the Selwyn climate change action plan. Since I have not seen any information on the proposed plan it intrigues me to know that Selwyn has developed a plan. This plan has not been rolled out to the public as far as I know. Stay tuned

The second interesting deputation is from Jo Hayward Haines. Jo is sending out a rally cry for trees as she calls it. Her recommendation to council is to develop a Tree Conservation Bylaw using Peterborough bylaw 70-120 as an example. According to Jo’s note to council her neighbor removed 12 trees from his property which she felt was devastating. Jo wants to see legislation to protect trees from irresponsible removal from developers and property owners. Her presentation as she says is not just a request for legislation, but it’s also an opportunity for all of us to learn what our shared responsibilities are as we face together the consequences of our often unconscious treatment in the past of the earth we live on.

The third interesting topic is a department review brought forward by Mayor Andy Mitchell. The department he would like to review with objectives and desired outcomes is the planning and building department. This review would be done by a steering committee. The desired outcome is to establish a culture of superior customer service, increase housing inventory and increased economic activity and job creation to name a few objectives.

We will chat later and discuss the outcomes of these and other discussions.

School Bus Drivers vote to strike

• The drivers voting to go on strike belong to Campeau Bus Lines
• Strike vote was 95.8% of the membership
• Campeau buses  transport students on 33 routes throughout the city and county
• Key issues is pay. Drivers want to be pain for their entire driving time not just from their first pick up until their last pick up
• The community will have 72 hours notice before a strike to arrange drop off and pick up for their children to school

Homecoming IV-Bad Blood Crowley VS McLellan Feb 9/2019

I am not going to write about the results of fights but the experience of the event. Which I will start off saying it was a highly entertaining show.

I was invited to go to the event with a very good friend,  Brad Johnston of Neil Johnston Heating 705-742-8769. (Highly recommended heating contractor in Peterborough) 

We had tickets on the floor with a very large table that sat 10. Like any other event you entered into the Memorial Center through the front doors. Because we had a table seat on the floor we where issued the paper wrist bands to be able to enter and exit. Walking in and trying to locate the table was fun as there was a ton of tables and level of tables. The closer to the ring the higher the class of table.

The set up was of this event was first class. I was very impressed as soon as I walked in. It was an “event”. I did see a lot of people I knew. The Who’s Who of Peterborough was certainly there. Once we sat down the beer lady quickly served us. She was on the ball. I looked around and every detail of the event was laid out professionally. The tables were covered with cloth and had a glossy magazine of the nights lineup of fights. There was big screens around the floor to catch any replays that you wanted to see. The lighting was truly impressive. It spotlighted the ring and gave a light show for the fighters entrance. I sat beside the fighter entrance and exit runway. That was a neat experience all in itself!

Our table was 3 or so tables back from the ring. Sight lines were just fine, I was able to see perfectly. I looked around at the other tables and the stands. I believe that you would have great sight-lines no matter where you were in the building.

The ring announcer was just as good as UFCs Bruce Buffer. He built up the fight and concluded the fight professionally and with entertainment. The fighters were world class and all put on a show. It is one thing to see on tv someone taking a punch but  it is so much more impressive live. If I was hit with some of those shots I would still be sleeping.

I am going to give Cody Crowley and his CCC Promotions a 10 out of 10 on this event. They delivered on all points with this show. Professionalism, entertainment, value and service. When Cody is back with another promotion I highly recommend you checking it out.

Floor Repair Contractor hired for Memorial Center

• A contractor has been hired by the city to replace the floor at the Memorial Centre
• City received 3 bids highest being 3.8 million dollars lowest at little over 3 million dollars
• Peak Engineering and Construction of Belleville won the bid which was the lowest bid
• Peak believes they can complete the work in 20 weeks not the previous thought 22 weeks
• Peak Engineering replaced the refrigeration plant  at the Memorial Centre last year
• Work to start in June and be completed in November

My opinion: The city has committed to this project. My best wishes for this project but I am extremely nervous of what they are going to find once the floor is opened up.

Ptbo Farmers Market Extension

• One year extension on lease agreement is expected between city and current tenant "The Peterborough and District Farmers Market Association"
• Same tenant has been under agreement with city since 1984
• City want to open bidding process for a new 5 year term
• City wants to hear from public to find out what they expect from a farmers market
• City staff will be researching how other city markets are operated. For example governance, where the product is from, etc
• Tensions at the Morrow Park market have been high with the eviction of 7 local farmers last spring.
• PDFMA states that the issues in 2018 prompted the election of a new board of directors and a creation of a new strategic plan 
• The new board members has not been released.

My opinion: What a mess this simple farmers market has become. The cloak of secrecy has always made me suspicious of their actions. Why the secrecy? It is a farmers market. If you have nothing to hide be open and honest.

War of Words. Crowley and McLellan

• Boxing card theme "Bad Blood"
• There is legitimate bad blood between Douro's Crowley and BC's McLellan
• McLellan used Facebook to start a war with Crowley and his supporters to earn this fight
• McLellan thinks Crowley has great training but as far as his skills he does not think that Crowley is as good as he thinks
• McLellan says Crowley has been spoon fed. Crowley rebutted saying it is a myth. He works with the best fighters in the world and there is nothing easy about that
• Tickets still available for the fight on Saturday night

My opinion: I am attending this event. I have not seen a live boxing fight since the 1990s. I am looking forward to it. I amire Cody Crowley in his skills to promote himself but also being a championship fighter. I am watching closely to what he does as he is an interesting local celebrity with an amazing work ethic. Good luck Cody.

Walk and Talk

As you noticed there hasn’t been any walk and talks for the last three days. I have been in bed sick with the flu. It made me think a lot about people who are truly deathly sick. Like People who are fighting cancer. People who are not going to get better in three days. People who are fighting for their life.

Buddha said-your body is precious. It is our vehicle for awakening. Treat it with care.

Often illness brings into focus what we wish we could be doing when we feel healthy. I felt trapped on the couch. My brain was working but my body was not cooperating. What would I rather be doing? I truly want to be doing the little things that make a huge impact. Working on my business.  Working to improve our community. Spending time with my family. I missed a huge hockey event with my daughter and the Peterborough Pete’s which broke my heart.

We are all vulnerable. When you’re sick you need to ask for help. Why don’t you ask for help when you’re healthy? Accepting help than expressing gratitude whole heartedly helps us remember how both parties benefit from the exchange of kindness.

Another question is how hard am I pushing myself. Am I taking some time for me? Sometimes being sick can  give me permission to rest. Yes being sick with the flu has brought some reflection. Reflection on my time is spent. And maybe you should reflect on it too. Nobody on their deathbed wished they watched more Netflix, spent more time at the office, drank more at the bar. On your deathbed what would you wish you did more? ———-Start doing that today!

The Day and life of a Peterborough Realtor and Selwyn family man. Journal 4

Snow day means 2nd cup of coffee day. We stated the day at 7:00am at hockey practice. Needed the 4x4 to get there this morning. We got home and decided everyone should bunker down for the morning. I worked at my home office for the morning keeping my eye on the weather. I tried to time it from snow to rain. I was able to get my driveway done and loaded the snowblower in the truck to look after Mom and Dads drive.

My 3 leg squirl was busy at the bird feeder today. Susan thought he lost weight. I was wondering did he go from 50 pounds to 45 pounds the robust rodent?

Today is Susan and I 15 year anniversary. Every year I go to McKnights to buy roses for her. This year was no different. I have a good streak going here!

They have the nicest roses.

After picking up the roses I stopped by 1411 McAuliffe Lane to flip signs. My favourate part of the job. SOLD!

FAIL of HMHA, OMHA, OFH and Hockey Canada. The letters sent.

Over the weekend I was able to get my hands on the emails that Hespeler Minor Hockey sent to the parents of the suspended 6 and 7 year olds. You can find these letters below.

Here is a few points I want to make. These letters should be professional and they were anything but professional. The letters started nicely, “Hi Chris!” The letter then quickly went bad from there. 

Keep in mind these are extremely heavy suspensions laid on these kids. You could spit in someone’s face, line brawl, head check and never be suspended for a full year, but this was the punishment laid upon 6 and 7 year olds for their actions. Their actions of playing hockey

It was not so much what was in the letter that had me bothered but what was not. Hespeler Minor Hockey who sent this email to the suspended kids parents never quoted what rule was broken, where to find that rule or what section or subsection,  what the rights of the kids are, who made this decision, what proof of the crime other then someone "seen" the child playing and how the punishment was rendered

There is so many wrong things happening here in this story. It all starts off from the Executive at Hespeler Minor Hockey Association, to OMHA to OHF then to Hockey Canada. These organizations better look into this situation now and explain to their membership, which I am part of, what the heck is going on. 

Here is the fails in mission statements in the hockey organizations:

Remember Hockey Canada your mandate: In a positive hockey experience for all participants, in a safe, sportsmanlike environment. In the development of life skills which will benefit participants throughout their lives. In the values of fair play and sportsmanship, including the development of respect for all people by all participants.

Remember Ontario Minor Hockey Accociation: Leaders om Community Sport-Creating better people and stronger communities
