Construction update and timelines for the James A Gifford Causeway repairs

No changes are coming from the original plan Peterborough County had for upgrading and repairing the James A Gifford Causeway as voted on during the last council meeting.

The current causeway that connects Ennismore and Bridgenorth over Chemong Lake was built in the 1950s to replace the floating bridge built in 1869. Repairs on the current causeway did happen in the 1980s, 2015(emergency), and 2018 (emergency). The community connection artery is in need of some major work and overhaul. The current plans for repairs and rebuilding started in 2011 with the very first Environmental Assesment which was completed in 2013. Over the last five years other consultations, investigations, and tenders have been completed. It is time to start actually working on the causeway.

The plan as announced from the county is to finish another fishery study this spring then construction begins in the fall with the first state of sequencing. This step is rock fill and shoreline stabilization at a cost of 5.8 million dollars. Once this step is complete pavement rehab, sidewalks, streetlights and storm sewers would be completed in 2021. Future plans for future councils include Roundabouts at both ends of the causeway (2029) and 4 lane expansion. (2039)

Peterborough County would like to thank the public for their patience with this major project on the County's busiest roadway. Traffic control will reduce points along the causeway to one lane throughout the construction process.

The County released this video on the causeway as an update:

My thoughts on the video and construction:

I went to game 3 of the Peterborough Petes and Oshawa Generals First Round Playoffs

I went to game 3 of the Peterborough Petes and Oshawa Generals First Round Playoffs

My son and I went to game three of the Gens and Petes first round. Gens had destroyed the Petes the first two games of the series. We did not know what to expect. Would we get a total mail-in effort or a bounce-back effort? The game started with Petes players that were tense and tentative. Afraid to make mistakes. The ref did not help as he called the cheeziest call ever and the Gens capilized within seconds of the beginning of the game. The Petes settled in and went to work. (The refs also settled in and relaxed as well) That was the key to this win. The Petes went to work.
The Generals are a more talented team than the Petes. Not by much but they are. If the Petes can put on their hard hat and play a heavy game the Generals they can tie up the series tonight and take the red and whites down.
Are the Petes willing to do what it takes? We will find out tonight!

I went to game 3 of the Ennismore Robert Young Construction juveniles and the Woolwich Wildcats AAA Finals

I went to the Ennismore Juveniles AAA OMHA Championship game

The "girls" in my household was gone for the night so I took my young lad Lucas to see if the Ennismore Juveniles could close out their series with the Woolwich Wildcats in the AAA Finals. I was able to attend Game 1 of the series and it was a heck of a game. When we were leaving Lucas dressed in his Ennismore gear for the game. I set my camera down and forgot it. I got lots of great pictures with my phone but maybe not as good if I had my camera with the zoom lens.

Pre-game meeting

I felt the officiating of the game was top notch. The referees and linesman kept control of the game from beginning to end of the game

Ennismore took control of the game early and never took their foot off the gas. I wish the Toronto Maple Leafs would take a lesson from these boys. The wave of offence never stopped with some amazing defence that must have been extremely frustrating for Woolwich.

The arena was absolutely packed. Lots of old friends and familiar faces throughout the building. Nice to see Jamie Maxwell at the game!

Ennismores Goaltending, Trev Lawrence was amazing. He is a solid young man that played with confidence and pose. Positioning was spot on and earned a shut out in a championship game. He may not understand until years to come what an accomplishment that truly is.

Ennismore Robert Young Construction juvenile's won over the Woolwich Wildcats 5-0 in game 3 to win the OMHA AAA Finals.

I am not sure if we can call the Ennismore Robert Young Construction juvenile team a franchise but the EMHA juveniles have some jaw-dropping stats.

7th straight OMHA Championship
4th Straight AAA OMHA Championship
5th EMHA AAA Championship
In 28 trips to the OMHA Juvenile Championship in multi-levels Ennismore has 26 Championships

Is that not some amazing stats for a small town outside of Peterborough? That is not counting the Silverstick Championships, the other age group OMHA and League championships and girls championships that Ennismore has won. I am very proud of our hockey program! Some absolutely wonderful people are involved.

(HEY DON CHERRY, I AM THINKING THIS IS WORTH A MENTION ON HOCKEY NIGHT IN CANADA NEXT SATURDAY NIGHT!)

Congratulations boys, Hometown Proud
